WINDSCREEN WASH/WIPE - DESCRIPTION

The windscreen wash/wipe system is operated by a stalk switch on the right side of the steering wheel. The stalk switch can be set to five positions that correspond to different functions:

  • windscreen wiper off (standstill);
  • intermittent operation (4 positions or 4 rain sensor sensitivities);
  • continuous operation (first speed);
  • continuous fast operation (second speed);
  • antipanic temporary fast operation (unstable position).

The intermittent operation may be further determined by the rain and dim light sensor which, when the stalk unit lever is set to the intermittent position, transmits its signal to the windscreen wiper control unit. Messages between the sensor and windscreen wiper control unit are transmitted via the A-BUS serial line. By adjusting the ring nut on the end of the windsceen wiper lever, you can adjust the sensor sensitivity to 4 levels (intermittent/sensitivity ring nut), so selecting the minimum level of water to control wiping. When the sensitivity increases, if the windscreen wiper is not in operation, the stalk unit gives the instruction for one wipe at the first speed, as feedback that the command has been implemented.

Thus the frequency of wipes is automatically adjusted in accordance with the quantity of water detected on the windscreen by the sensor.

If the rain and dim light sensor is faulty or there is no signal on the A-BUS serial line, the stalk unit controls the windscreen wiper manually.

The windscreen washer logic in 'intelligent' mode is as follows:

  • on receipt of the windscreen wash command, the stalk unit activates the windscreen washer pump;
  • after the windscreen wash command has persisted 0.5 seconds, the stalk unit operates the windscreen washer in continuous mode at the first speed;
  • the pump and windscreen wiper remain active for as long as the wash command persists;
  • when the windscreen wash command is released, the stalk unit no longer activates the pump while the wipe control unit continues to operate the windscreen wiper until 3 wipes have been completed;
  • after six seconds there is a further windscreen wipe at the first speed ('after-wipe' function).

During starting (INT/A), the device is temporarily excluded.

The windscreen wipe and wash can only be activated in key-on condition (INT), while in key-off (stop) the functions are disabled.

WINDSCREEN WASH/WIPE - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The windscreen wiper stalk of the stalk unit

H005

selects the various operating modes of the windscreen wash/wipe.

Stalk unit

H005

is supplied at pin 11 of connector A by relay

R12

: ignition-operated line INT/A, protected by fuse

F43

: both are contained in under-facia junction unit

B002

.

The supply to relay

R12

comes from a direct line protected by fuse

F1

contained in engine bay junction unit

B001.

Stalk unit

H005

Depending on the pre-selected function, the stalk unit H005 (connector A) sends the following control signals to the internal electronic device to the windscreen wiper motor N015:

  • from pin 9 for operation at first speed;
  • from pin 8 for operation at second speed;
  • from pin 6 for zeroing.

is earthed at pin 7 of connector A.

The windscreen wiper motor

N015

is then connected to earth at pin 2.

Stalk unit

H005

also supplies windscreen/rear window wiper pump

N022

by sending a supply signal and an an earth signal from pins 12 and 10 of connector A.

The signal to enable the intermittent function via the rain sensor

K125 is sent on the A-BUS line from pin 4 connector A of the stalk unit H005.

On the same line the body computer

M001

acquires the windscreen wiper on/off status and a possible fault in the rain sensor. The sensor

K125

is supplied at pin 1 of the ignition-dependent line INT protected by fuse

F49

contained in the junction unit under the facia

B002
